Mission
Wildflower Composers amplifies the voices of female, transgender, nonbinary, and genderqueer composers by providing accessible and high-quality programming, resources, and mentorship to a global community of early-career composers. We envision a truly equitable and diverse field of contemporary music, where composers of all identities have the opportunities and resources they need to succeed.
What We Do
Wildflower Composers offers a variety of programs in-person and online intended for a global community of female, transgender, nonbinary, and genderqueer composers. In addition to a suite of online virtual courses and collaborations with local Philadelphia-based organizations, we organize an annual Wildflower Composers Festival, which takes place at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. During the two-week program, our composers engage in coursework with core instructors, workshops with performers, and private composition lessons. Each student composes a new work for the festival, which is premiered and professionally recorded at our final concert. In recognition of the various social, geographic, financial, or opportunistic barriers that may prevent young musicians from gaining access to compositional resources and/or training, we do not require our applicants to have any previous experience with composition in order to attend. It is our hope that our students graduate from our festival having gained valuable knowledge, access to musical and human resources, a tangible, high-quality recording of a new work, and a supportive network of gender-expansive composers that far outlasts our programming.
