Mission

To improve the quality of life of African American citizens in the West Southern Pines community by preventing community deterioration through (1) providing educational, technical and financial services to low and moderate income land and homeowners; (2) acquiring abandoned, foreclosed or vacant homes or properties; (3) redeveloping or rehabilitating abandoned, foreclosed or blighted properties; (4) accepting real or personal property by way of gift in accordance with the Articles of Incorporation; and (5) the preservation or conservation of real or personal properties of architectural, archaeological, artistic, cultural, historical, natural or scientific significance.

What We Do

After a three year successful acquisition struggle with the School Board, the Trust's primary focus is redeveloping the 17 acre historic school campus, with 59,000 sqft of buildings into the Center for African American History, Cultural Arts & Business. The Center's Museum will convey the rich history of West Southern Pines as one of the first incorporated Black Townships in NC in 1923 and its struggles, including its hostile takeover in 1931. The Center will continue its long history of being at the core of the Community's social fabric along with the Churches and will offer opportunities to improve the long-depressed economic conditions.
