PSVa's mission is to raise awareness of and encourage screening for PMADs within the healthcare community and to provide social support and other recovery resources to moms and families after diagnosis.

What We Do

PSVa was founded to fill a gap in services for women experiencing postpartum depression and related perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) which are the most common complication of pregnancy and childbirth, affecting approximately 1 in 5 women.

PSVa has fulfilled this mission by helping thousands of women overcome PMADs through providing three key services:

1) FREE support to women experiencing PMADs via phone, email, text, social media, and a statewide network of 23 hospital-based support groups.

2) Information and resources, including referrals to 200+ specially-trained mental health professionals with expertise in treating PMADs.

3) Outreach and education to maternal-child healthcare providers so they can educate women about PMADs, screen for them routinely, and connect affected women with resources.

PSVa has been expanding throughout Virginia as funding and staffing become available and provides support groups at over 28 locations in Northern Virginia (Alexandria, Arlington, Chantilly, Falls Church, Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Leesburg, Manassas), Central Virginia (Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Richmond), and Hampton Roads (Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg).

In each location, PSVa convenes local stakeholders through a Maternal Mental Health Coalition to create resources for recovery and to train maternal-child healthcare providers to educate women about PMADs, screen for them routinely, and connect affected women with PSVa's resources.
