Mission

Clean Air Council is a member-supported environmental organization, dedicated to protecting and defending everyone’s right to breathe clean air. The Council works through a broad array of related sustainability and public health initiatives, using public education, community action, government oversight, and enforcement of environmental laws.

What We Do

Clean Air Council is a mid-sized environmental advocacy organization of young, energetic staff who work on cutting edge environmental issues, primarily in Pennsylvania. With 8,000 dues-paying members across Pennsylvania, the Council acts to safeguard and improve the air quality for the benefit of everyone’s health.

The Council is one of the lead organizations working on the air quality impact from Marcellus Shale gas drilling, and was one of the first to recognize the danger that Shale activities posed to our air. We have reviewed over 40 drilling permits to ensure they comply with relevant air quality laws and regulations and have pursued litigation against the most egregious violators. We partnered with a prominent solar and wind energy supplier to promote the use of these renewable energy sources to the public through its community outreach team. Accordingly, over 500 households have switched to this supplier for their electricity. We have also has been doing outreach and education to communities throughout the State on the need for stronger Clean Air laws in order to protect the health of families through the Mom’s Clean Air Force campaign. So far a total of 6,700 individuals have signed on to the Mom’ Clean Air Force email list to take action in support of more protective air quality laws.

The Council has come a long way in the 46 years it has been in existence. What was originally a two-person, $30,000-a-year operation, now employs over 30 people and has a $2 million annual budget. There’s plenty more to come including work on outdoor wood-burning boilers, off-shore wind energy, community health assessments around Marcellus drilling sites, and outreach on energy efficiency. Our staff is friendly, informal, and enjoyable to work with. We treat each other like a family, the same way you will be treated if you join us. Plus, we frequently offer office breaks featuring Insomnia cookies.
