Project details

What we need
  • Ongoing graphic design support for 10-15 hours over the course of 4 weeks
  • Support may include: logo design, flyer design, branded assets for social media
  • Note: We devised this project to connect nonprofits and volunteers for more flexible, more immediate impact. We strongly suggest you start with 4 weeks and decide from there if you'd like to continue working.
Additional details

We are in the process of re-curating our museum. We need graphic design support to transform our written text/selected images into visually appealing exhibit panels. This project involves five different rooms (this project posting is the first room) with panels in each room, but once we decide on a design it could serve as a template. Ideally, we would work with one designer on all five rooms. Designer would need to use Adobe InDesign, with deliverables as actual design files (InDesign .idd).

What we have in place
  • We currently have written text, images, logo and branding materials, which should make it easy for you to get started. We also have sample layouts from previous site exhibits, and the ability to provide any other information you need.
How this will help
This project will save us $2,397 , allowing us to focus on installation costs including reproductions, interior changes, and technological needs.

This project advances our site's vision to share the history of Highland (our historic site) through an inclusive, accessible narrative of its people and events. Our re-curation is informed by many collaborators, including out Council of Descendant Advisors. This work helps our visiting public experience U.S. history in new, innovative and thought-provoking ways to better understand how our many presents are informed by our many pasts.

Our mission

Highland's mission is to engage the public in learning about U.S. history through inclusive narratives of Highland and the people who lived on the property, with a focus on the period of James Monroe's ownership.

What we do

We promote diverse narratives of Highland, including the histories of James Monroe and family, visitors, and the enslaved people who lived and worked there. Interpretation at Highland connects individuals' stories with the themes and events of U.S. history relevant to the years of Monroe's public career. Highland is distinguished by its joining of public and academic history and advancing this vision using new and traditional technology. Highland is uniquely placed to serve as a laboratory for creative public history as a division of William & Mary, an institution of higher education with a commitment to excellence in research and teaching at all levels and renowned doctoral programs in history, anthropology, and American studies.

Testimonials

Lee was spectacular to work with from start to finish. Our historic site is undergoing a re-curation and our visitor experience will shift from guided to self-guided interpretation. As such, our exhibit panels need to do much work: provide information, engage visitors, and appeal visually. We had five separate spaces that needed to have a similar design style but with different content. Our staff had this content ready but we needed assistance with the design and layout. Lee came to the rescue! This multi-month project required much back-and-forth via email. Revisions, questions, concerns, new images — Lee responded capably, quickly, and amiably to everything we threw her way! It’s been a tricky time to craft new exhibits, but Lee’s expertise and skills helped us achieve a major element in our new exhibits. She offered helpful, thoughtful suggestions that enhanced our initial ideas to display the content in innovative ways. Our panels are almost ready for installation, and they look wonderful. We highly recommend Lee as a graphic designer, and we consider her a vital part of our exhibit team.
