Project details

What we need
  • Document that articulates in a consistent voice key messages about the Organization’s identity, constituents, mission, and vision
  • Creation of taglines and talking points to help the Organization communicate clearly and concisely
  • Recommendations on tailoring messaging for common communication channels (e.g., website copy, printed marketing collateral, pitching verbally)
What we have in place
  • The organization is fairly mature, and has been around for over 15 years. As a consequence we have a good sense of who we are an what we do best. We have a website, we've gone through a strategic planning exercise, and we have been successful in raising funds to support our initiative. We also have a fun and lively board that is great to work with. We need a "refresh" of our messaging, and most importantly we need consistency in how we talk about ourselves.
How this will help
This project will save us $5,400 , allowing us to provide apprenticeships to 30 students over the course of a year.

For the past four years our organization has been engaged in fundraising for a new education center for our students. The school has recently opened, and now we are turning to re-evaluating and better articulating what our organization is about, and our unique value proposition for new and existing donors. Consequently, we need someone with marketing and messaging experience to help us develop and synchronize our messaging, so that it is uniformly reflected across not only our website and social media accounts, but in the ways board members describe the organization.

Our mission

Jitegemee gives youth who have been living and/or working on the streets of Machakos, Kenya an opportunity to change their lives through formal and vocational education. We believe that every child with the desire to learn and the will to succeed should be allowed to do so. We serve about 200 young people each year who meet our criteria of economic need and willingness to commit to the program.

What we do

Jitegemee has been working to educate street and destitute children in Machakos, a town about an hour outside Nairobi, since 1996.
About half of the children we serve are supported in formal education, from primary school to college. We provide uniforms, books, tutoring and school fees, as well as educational activities during the school vacations.
The other half of our students attend a vocational program that teaches basic literacy, math and life skills for about six months, and then places them in hands-on apprenticeships to learn life-changing skills such as carpentry, welding, auto repair, tailoring and hairdressing. An evaluation found that 82% of our vocational graduates report that they are earning money from their trades, and about 60% say they have become the primary breadwinners of their homes.
Both our formal and vocational students are part of the same Jitegemee family, to whom we offer daily meals, medical care, life skills, counseling and home placement, and fun activities outside of school. Jitegemee has a staff of 5 Kenyan professionals. Most of its funding is raised by a 10-person board of American volunteers.

Brand Messaging Project

Jitegemee is such a great organization doing amazing work for the youth of Machakos, Kenya. Farah and Kyalo were great to work with and I am proud to have helped them better understand their current brand messaging on their social and web platforms so that they can more easily move forward with their planned rebrand.
