The Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness is dedicated to creating a sustainable, statewide voice and the infrastructure and systemic change needed to empower communities to end homelessness.

Our Vision: To prevent and end homelessness in Michigan.

What We Do

MCAH is a nonprofit membership organization formed as an association of emergency shelters, transitional housing programs, nonprofit housing and service programs, government programs and concerned citizens from across the state.

Origins

A group of interested stakeholders gathered in 1991 for the sole purpose of forming a collaborative body that could further the work being done in Michigan on behalf of persons experiencing homelessness. One meeting led to another, and another, and so on, until the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness came into being. It was incorporated as a statewide organization devoted to enhancing services and systems that could help improve the lives of individuals and families affected by homelessness.

Goal

The Coalition's goal is to be the leading advocate for individuals and families who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless in Michigan, along with the agencies that serve them.

How We Do This

The Coalition pursues this Mission through collaboration, technical assistance, resource development, and programming with or on behalf of local service providers; public awareness/education; and public policy and advocacy.

This includes programs and services that are based on an understanding of homelessness which is driven by extensive and varied experience in the field and on-going primary and secondary research and analysis.

Homeless service providers benefit directly from educational and networking services intended to improve their client services, operations, outreach and resource develepment. They also benefit from the Coalition's advocacy efforts focusing on the state and federal level and its efforts to help educate the media, funders, and the general public regarding issues relating to homelessness.
