Camp Phoenix is closing the achievement gap by accelerating learning during critical periods for children in low-income communities.

What We Do

The lynchpin of the Camp Phoenix program is a three-week summer immersion program for low-income children in Oakland that combines academic enrichment with traditional summer camp activities to empower students to thrive in school and build critical leadership skills.

Summer learning loss has become one of the leading causes of underachievement in schools that lack resources for summer programs. As a result of our three-week program in 2013, campers on average gained over 2 months of learning in math and reading. Only at Camp Phoenix can a child read a novel inside a Native American tipi, use math concepts to find speed while on a 3-legged hike, learn to swim, and challenge him/herself to participate in a solo night hike all in one day.
