Mission

Breakthrough Greater Boston's (BTGB) mission is to inspire excitement for learning, create paths to college, and promote careers in education.

An independent 501c3 nonprofit, BTGB is an affiliate of the national Breakthrough Collaborative.

What We Do

BTGB transforms urban education for students and teachers at two sites -- Boston and Cambridge. Through six years of intensive, tuition-free, out of school time programming, Breakthrough changes students' academic trajectories and supports them along the path to four-year college. Simultaneously, Breakthrough builds the next generation of teachers through competitive recruitment, research-based training, and coaching from master teachers.

Breakthrough has consistently demonstrated that low-income students and students of color can achieve at the highest levels when provided the necessary support to advance academically and engaged in a culture of high expectations. For the past five years, 97% of Breakthrough seniors have enrolled in college, far outpacing their peers, 67% of whom go on to four-year college. 96% of these students have persisted and are still enrolled in college today.

Breakthrough has also proven that the best and brightest college students can be recruited and trained to become the excellent teachers our students deserve. For the past three years, 100% of Breakthrough teachers improved their instructional skills over the course of the summer. For the last two years, over 80% of Breakthrough’s graduating teachers have continued in the field of education, demonstrating that Breakthrough’s impact extends far beyond one summer.
