What We Do

Acción Latina is a community arts and cultural organization situated in San Francisco’s historic Mission District. We are dedicated to promoting Latino arts, community media and civic engagement as a way of building healthy and empowered Latino communities. Our oldest project is El Tecolote, a free, bilingual, biweekly newspaper with a distribution of 10,000 that has served the Latino communities of the Bay Area since 1970. Acción Latina also produces a wide array of performing, literary, and visual arts events that showcase the work of emerging Latino talent. Additionally, we pursue local, regional and national projects that help to advance our mission, such as the Veteranos Project—an ongoing initiative to capture the oral histories of Latino leaders in our community—and Voices for Justice, a multimedia project to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Latino press in the United States. Acción Latina has one of the most comprehensive archival collections chronicling the Latino experience in San Francisco.
