Project details

What we need
  • A written document that identifies the Organization's timeline, onboarding goals, recommended responsibilities and support for new hire success:
  • An onboarding checklist and timeline template that can be completed by the Organization for each new hire
  • A suggested checklist and template outlining onboarding methods the Organization should pursue to meet its goals (human resources and information technology materials, department presentations, mentor assignment, skill sharing, etc.)
  • Recommendations on how to delegate onboarding responsibilities within the Organization or department, if applicable
  • A short plan for communicating with the new hire prior to their first day of work
Additional details

We have a current on-boarding checklist, but some information is duplicated in multiple places, and there are gaps missing such as conveying the culture and history of the organization, getting job-specific resources and training, and making the new employee feel at home in their new role. We are currently in the process of hiring on a handful of new employees, so we want to get this in place sooner than later.

What we have in place
  • We currently have a strategic plan and somewhat of a vision for what we want, which should make it easy for you to get started. We also have an onboarding checklist and all of our current HR documents, and the ability to provide any other information you need.
How this will help
This project will save us $8,686 , allowing us to focus time, energy, and funding towards recruiting the right candidates, and continue with our mission to serve our community with resources for residents and businesses.

We have a complex organization with very limited staff, and a fair amount of turnover. I think that part of that turnover is due to a shaky on-boarding process where new staff feel ill-equipped to succeed in their roles, and are often left confused about the overall organization and their expectations within it. Right now, our on-boarding is basically all of the legal paperwork, a few quick lessons on how to use the copier and whatnot, and then we send them on their way.

Our mission

Riverworks Development Corporation (RDC) drives social and economic development by aligning residents and businesses with specialized resources that strengthen Harambee, Riverwest and surrounding communities.

What we do

Financial Clinic: Provides innovative solutions to help families, individuals and small businesses reach their full potential by increasing credit scores, building wealth, and learning new ways to achieve short and long-term financial goals. The Clinic accomplishes this through one-on-one financial coaching, group-based education, free tax preparation services (VITA program), debt management, planning, goal setting, building banking relationships, and other referral resources.

Neighborhood Development & Creative Placemaking: Collaborates with residents and other stakeholders to create a vibrant community that reflects the culture and values of the Harambee and Riverwest neighborhoods. This includes activating and revitalizing public spaces, such as the Beerline Trail, with art and culture, facilitating community improvement and safety projects, and connecting residents and homeowners to resources - including those available through the Harambee Neighborhood Improvement District (NID) #7.

Business Development HUB: Provides technical assistance to local entrepreneurs and businesses along with business coaching, financial and grant resources. Services available to businesses include: property/business beautification strategies, security initiatives, marketing & promotional opportunities, and business planning. We connect property owners and entrepreneurs/small businesses to physical space, and offer networking and educational opportunities.

Riverworks Cleans: Hires community members who have barriers to employment through this social enterprise program. They serve the community by cleaning up sidewalks and curbs, vacant lots and commercial districts. Services include litter and graffiti removal, event set up, minor landscaping, streetscape maintenance, and returning stolen property. Contracts include private businesses, BIDS, and the City of Milwaukee.

Real Estate Development: Leads catalytic residential and commercial projects which have a positive economic and social impact on the community. The four core values are: create jobs, increase tax revenues, reuse vacant & blighted properties, and generate revenue for RDC's programs. RDC has completed $11.6M in development, including two commercial projects (over 47,000 square feet) and 36 affordable apartments.

Testimonials

Gae was so great to work with! She went above and beyond to gather information about our organization and on-boarding process, reached out to new employees to get their input on the process, customized documents to fit our needs, and helped create a presentation to share with incoming employees. Our on-boarding process got a huge facelift, and is way more thorough and effective than before. Gae brought a lot of skills and knowledge to the project, and I would highly recommend her to anyone looking to improve their on-boarding!
