Project plan
Our mission
Ending domestic violence in our community
What we do
Established in 1979, the Shelter for Help in Emergency is the only agency in the City of Charlottesville, and the five surrounding counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson providing comprehensive services to women and children who are victims of domestic violence within their home or relationship.
Women and children needing a safe place to escape the violence in their home may seek temporary, emergency housing through the residential facility. Abused men are offered support services and temporary emergency shelter at a safe alternative location. Victims of abuse not needing residential services are offered counseling and support services by program staff.
Shelter services include:
24-hour crisis hotline
Supportive Individual and group counseling
Case management
Court accompaniment & legal advocacy
Outreach and support to the Spanish-speaking community
Violence prevention services to youth and children
Community education & allied professional training
