Storytelling
Storytelling
Project details
What we need
- A compelling narrative, or set of stories
- Persuasive copy that can be used in appeals to donors, annual reports, grant applications, and media relations
- Popular examples: Organization's founding story, a program achievement or milestone, a look back at the past few years, organizational backgrounder, etc.
- Note: This project is not intended to support your general content planning or marketing but there are several projects in our Marketing & Communications category which are a good fit!
Additional details
For an upcoming newsletter and online publication, I would like to have stories written about several tutors and tutor/student pairs -- also a board member/chair of our diversity committee. As an option, I am hoping the volunteer will create a "template/process" for these pairs to begin to write their own stories together that can appear in our communications.
What we have in place
- We currently have story leads, which should make it easy for you to get started. We also have recordings of some interviews already conducted, and the ability to provide any other information you need.
How this will help
This project will save us $1,792 , allowing us to focus time on direct donor communication, expanding our donor base, and building partnerships to reach more adults in low income communities and specific immigrant groups not being served for ESL.
The project will help us communicate impact to our donors. It will also motivate our tutors to recognize them and empower tutors and students to tell their own story.
Project plan
Our mission
The Oakland Literacy Council believes that all people have a fundamental right to literacy. With support from our funders, we pair trained, compassionate tutors with adult learners until they become proficient readers, writers, and communicators. As literate adults, they make our communities and our democracy stronger. They contribute to our economy, exercise their voice in their communities, and give their children a solid educational foundation. The Oakland Literacy Council is the only organization dedicated solely to ending adult illiteracy in Oakland County, a large metro Detroit community of 1.25 million people.
What we do
We help low-literate adults with reading, writing, English comprehension and speaking, and digital literacy skills. One on one tutors, online curriculum, and small group instruction is used to further student goals.
Testimonials
Anne has done fantastic work in storytelling. She has truly been a partner. Her work is creative and insightful. She has written stories from interviews previously recorded as well as an original interview conducted by her with a student. Anne has helped me consider stories better from the donor perspective and provide valuable feedback and "food for thought" on our newsletter. I enthusiastically recommend her!!
It has been a true pleasure working with Oakland Literacy Council. They have so many wonderful stories to tell! My contact, Sue, was friendly, organized, helpful, and encouraging.
