What we need
- A compelling narrative, or set of stories

- Popular examples: Organization's founding story, a program achievement or milestone, a look back at the past few years, organizational backgrounder, etc.

Additional details
We are a volunteer-driven organization focused on adult literacy. Our volunteer tutors meet 1:1 with adults to improve language, digital, and soon math skills. In the last year, our student base, tutor base, and programs have diversified. We need to create a set of stories that reflect our organization now, demonstrate the need/impact in terms of today's challenges, engage our donors, and recognize/motivate our volunteer base.
What we have in place
- We have identified some initial story ideas and tutors/students as features or case studies. I also have several interviews already conducted that could be used to create stories.
How this will help
This project will save us $1,187 , allowing us to use our time to focus more attention on talking directly to our donors as well as use the stories to show potential students and tutors that they can learn and volunteer.
Stories are critical for engaging our volunteers and donors -- both individual donors and grantors. These are the main funding sources that are driving the growth of our programs. We need to use the stories to show that "literacy" means more than reading a book -- it means reading/writing/speaking, using a computer, math -- and without, these foundational skills, adults cannot get the advanced education and training needed to jobs that give them and their families a higher quality of life.

Our mission
The Oakland Literacy Council believes that all people have a fundamental right to literacy. With support from our funders, we pair trained, compassionate tutors with adult learners until they become proficient readers, writers, and communicators. As literate adults, they make our communities and our democracy stronger. They contribute to our economy, exercise their voice in their communities, and give their children a solid educational foundation. The Oakland Literacy Council is the only organization dedicated solely to ending adult illiteracy in Oakland County, a large metro Detroit community of 1.25 million people.
What we do
We help low-literate adults with reading, writing, English comprehension and speaking, and digital literacy skills. One on one tutors, online curriculum, and small group instruction is used to further student goals.
