What We Need
  • A Membership Strategy document of up to 10 pages, including analysis of the Organization’s current membership program, step-by-step guide to a new and improved program, growth goals and creative outreach strategies

The Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts is a 14-year-old multi-faceted arts center. Memberships account for 16% - 20% of the development budget, and membership has been declining since 2014. Retaining current members and attracting new members is more important than ever, but with performance and class schedules in a state of flux our traditional membership benefits may not be as attractive. Looking for a plan to retain and recruit members. A volunteer with cultural arts experience is a plus.

What We Have In Place
  • We have membership data for the past 10 years, a list of membership benefits, and a schedule for contacting current and lapsed members.
How This Will Help
This project will save us $8,908 , allowing us to put more dollars toward adding new classes.

Memberships comprise 16% - 20% of the development budget and 12% of the organization's overall budget. With reliable membership income we can increase programming at the center and in the community.

Project Plan

Prep: Distribution of Prep Materials
  • Professional connects with Volunteer Manager to discuss current membership program, development goals, budget, and growth goals
Milestone 1: Information Gathering
  • Professional and Volunteer Manager develop and execute an in-depth SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats)
  • Professional surveys existing and potential members through focus groups and/or one-on-one interviews to obtain external data
  • Professional conducts independent market analysis to research the target market, competition, and peer organizations' membership development strategies
Milestone 2: Drafting Document
  • Professional creates a strategy document that includes membership development and engagement recommendations, communications and outreach strategies, events, activities, ongoing services, and programs
  • Volunteer Manager reviews and provides feedback which the Professional incorporates
Milestone 3: Presentation of Final Deliverable
  • Professional delivers the final document
  • Volunteer Manager and Professional conduct a wrap-up meeting and discuss next steps for implementation of this strategy

The mission of the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts is to encourage and advocate the visual and performing arts by providing a forum where diverse audiences can actively participate in cultural experiences. Working with Rob was a great experience and resulted in an extremely usable membership strategy. He produced a "working document", not a report to be read once and then put on a shelf. It was evident from our first phone conversation he was no novice at this type of coaching and consulting and knew the right questions to ask to help educate himself about our organization and our needs. Through an exchange of documents and information and in conversations with various staff members he identified key strategies and goals and constructed effective ways of meeting those goals. His attention to detail produced a report that is easily understood by both staff members and board members Rob is very personable and devoted a lot of time and energy into our project. I highly recommend him and would gladly work with him again.

Membership Strategy Project

Working with Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts was a fantastic experience. Susan and team were able to clearly state where they want the organization to go from a membership perspective. It was a great collaboration since Susan and team came in with their own great ideas while at the same time were not afraid to ask for input and direction from me when necessary. As a result, we created a broad, yet thorough membership strategy that allows for the organization to achieve their membership objectives, while maintaining a level of flexibility that is vital during the ever-changing non-profit dynamics of the COVID pandemic.
