Project details

What we need
  • A detailed Operating Budget covering at least one full fiscal year
  • Expert advice on how to reconcile actual expenses with budgeted expenses
Additional details

Our organization currently handles 2 major activities: a) running a training facility in a low-income part of Nairobi, b) building open source elearning software. We need to work on a model that covers both those activities in a way that can be scaled up/down easily based on ~3 possible funding tiers.

What we have in place
  • We currently have a draft budget and historical data, which should make it easy for you to get started. We also have an organizational deck and written materials, and the ability to provide any other information you need.
How this will help
This project will save us $9,114 , allowing us to pour all of our resources into paying team members in Kenya and providing free training

This project is really important to present to our board of directors and other possible funders to show clarity of spending and keep our training facility in Nairobi, Kenya open. The facility is entirely run by graduates of our 3-monthtraining programs, who are great at teaching and still have a ways to go on the fundraising front and to get our business model sustainable.

Our mission

Tunapanda Institute spreads dignity through training young people in East Africa for professional careers and creative self-expression, specializing in fields related to technology, design, and business.

What we do

Tunapanda Institute is like a stool with 3 legs:

- Trained by Tunapanda: digital era learning communities. We provide no-cost 3-month intensive training courses to young people aged 19-25 and assist graduates in finding employment. Our primary training facility is in a Nairobi informal settlement called Kibera. Some graduates remain to become apprentice teachers who coach future cohorts of learners while simultaneously continuing advanced studies in areas like software engineering, design, and entrepreneurship.

- Produced by Tunapanda: earning while learning. After the apprenticeship phase, many of our team members enter a journeyman phase. Here, we further hone our skills in the craft of teaching and school administration while earning revenues by providing digital services to clients. This keeps the school open and free while ensuring we have a sustainable model and curricula that meet market needs.

- Powered by Tunapanda: remixing the model. A big goal is to keep the costs of learning as low as possible. In many parts of the world, including East Africa, bandwidth is unaffordable and technology-enabled teachers are scarce. We build open source software and create open educational resources (OERs) that enable others to remix our model with ease and affordability, even in difficult, remote areas like Turkana. We also run an outreach program to high schools in our neighborhood and use wireless technology to make our materials available to the wider community.

Testimonials

Yemi was a real pleasure to work with, he went above and beyond — including teaching our team members in Kenya how to use QuickBooks and how to define the needed reports. We highly recommend working with him.
