Our mission

To improve the lives of the marginalized residents of northern Kenya through economic empowerment, education, advocacy and the training of a new generation of entrepreneurial, ethical leaders.

What we do

The BOMA Project is a U.S. nonprofit and registered Kenyan NGO with an innovative approach to livelihood diversification, poverty alleviation and climate-change adaptation in the arid lands of Africa.

BOMA’s Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP) is a two-year poverty-graduation program that targets ultra-poor women in Northern Kenya and helps them to start small businesses in their rural villages by providing a cash grant (seed capital to launch a business), training in business skills and savings, and hands-on mentoring by BOMA Village Mentors.

REAP helps women to earn a sustainable income and build up savings, so they can feed their families, pay for school fees and medical care, cope with emergencies, survive drought, and build community resiliency in the face of a changing climate.

As of April 2013, BOMA has launched 1,380 businesses in Northern Kenya, comprised of 4468 adults who support 23,340 children. Based on our most recent impact assessment, we have a 99% success rate after one year and a 97% success rate after three years – an unheard-of accomplishment in the microfinance world – and are striving for a 100% success rate.
