Project details

What we need
  • A compelling narrative, or set of stories
  • Persuasive copy that can be used in appeals to donors, annual reports, grant applications, and media relations
  • Popular examples: Organization's founding story, a program achievement or milestone, a look back at the past few years, organizational backgrounder, etc.
  • Note: This project is not intended to support your general content planning or marketing but there are several projects in our Marketing & Communications category which are a good fit!
Additional details

Since 1990, the Rivera Memorial Foundation has provided a safe haven of youth programming to over 1,000 children and over $60,000 in college scholarship funds to local youths. The organization has grown and has provided a various programs for the children in the city of Waterbury: the Mentor Me Program Internship Program, After-School Program, Boy Scouts, Chess Club, Scholarship Competition, Camp Fire Summer Enrichment Program, Youth Sports Clinics, Boys Basketball League, three $1 000 Scholarships for high school seniors and college students along with the first and longest running program the Rivera & Hughes Southend Cheerleaders.

What we have in place
  • We have frequent contact with local press contacts. We have a Facebook page with 775 'likes' and an Instagram account with 106 followers. On our website we have a few success stories that past participants have shared and a form for others to complete to share their story.
How this will help
This project will save us $2,397 , allowing us to continue to provide low cost programming to families without having to make drastic increases in program fees, or even possibly ending programs due to lack of funding.

The Rivera Memorial Foundation has been in existence for 28 years providing affordable after school youth programs to families in the City of Waterbury. Due to the substantially low costs of our programs our organization relies heavily on grants and donations in order to survive. One would imagine that a nonprofit that's been serving the youth of its community for almost three decades would have donations and sponsors pouring in, however. that's not the case. Unfortunately, we're often forgotten. People call the RMF one of the city's best kept secrets, but it time to let the secret out with storytelling!

Our mission

The Rivera Memorial Foundation, Inc. exists first and foremost to develop the full human potential of its participants by fostering their intellectual, social, economical, emotional, moral and spiritual growth.

What we do

Our organization, founded in 1990, is serving the Greater Waterbury community with our services for at risk and low income youths and their families. We offer all of our programs to any families who register despite their social economic status. We offer year round programming and college scholarships.

Our Bridge After School Program serves over 60 students in grades K thru 12th. We have collaborated with several schools for bus drop off to our site. Our program offers a low cost alternative for after school care where students are provided with homework help, tutoring, peer mentoring, educational and recreational activities. Students in the program participate in the Crazy 8 Bedtime Math Club, ScootPad Online Educational Platform and science workshops with Flanders Nature Center. Our High School Internship Program offers high school students a stipend to work with the students in our after school program. Interns participate in weekly finance workshops and are required to volunteer one day a week.

Our organization also runs a licensed summer enrichment day camp, Camp Fire, where children are exposed to educational and recreational activities to their maintain their basic literacy and math skills. The summer enrichment program serves over 75 youths. The program runs workshops for our youth in collaboration with the local police and fire department, Literacy Volunteers, Girl Scouts and local restaurants.

The organization also provided various sporting activities for area youth. The most popular are our Youth Basketball League and Rivers & Hughes Southend Cheerleaders. Both programs offers the opportunity to youth to participate in programs without having the to pay the high costs associated with the sports. Youth in the programs are provided with volunteer coaches whom provide basic training and positive support to improve the skills of the youth involved.
