What we need
  • Clear and effective copy for an annual report that illustrates the Organization’s successes and plans for growth (e.g., descriptions of programs, allocation of funds, and recognition of donors and volunteers)
  • Blueprint of the structure for the annual report, including optimal content, length, and style
What we have in place
  • We currently have numerous grant proposals, and reports with client stories, which should make it easy for you to get started. We also have a dedicated team member to this project who will oversee the project, and the ability to provide any other information you need.
How this will help
This project will save us $9,148 , allowing us to Serve more clients and give them the tools to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive in their communities.

We are an organization that has undergone transition - we have had a change of Executive Directors, and ultimately a large turnover of staff. We are looking to complete a combined 2016/2017 Annual Report. On this project, you will have a dedicated staff member shepherding the process to ensure it is done in a timely manner. The Special Assistant to the Executive Director has strong writing skills and good knowledge of the organization, but has no experience writing an annual report and would like guidance to ensure it is succinct, compelling to funders, and professional.

Prep: Distribution of Materials
  • Volunteer Manager delivers relevant information such as the Organization's mission, vision, and key messages, profiles of individuals or communities served, previous annual reports, and stories of impact
  • Volunteer Manager shares the previous year's statistics, financial statements, significant accomplishments and stories of impact, awards received, new and noteworthy grants, as well as the complete list of supporters (including names and donor levels)
  • Professional reviews prep materials, identifies any information gaps, and requests additional information or clarification (as needed)

  • Professional and Volunteer Manager connect to discuss prep materials, overall goals, and desired tone and style for the annual report

Our mission

Chhaya Community Development Corporation is an anti-poverty non-profit organization based in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York. Founded in 2000, Chhaya is committed to breaking down the barriers to the economic, social, and political advancement of low income South Asians. Chhaya – a Sanskrit word meaning “shelter or shade” – aims to protect and promote affordable housing in New York City. Chhaya has helped prevent hundreds of foreclosures; assisted first-time homebuyers in obtaining thousands of dollars in down-payment assistance; played a critical role in the ongoing effort to legalize basement apartments to expand the pool of safe and affordable housing; provided individuals with key immigration services to better navigate daily life; empowered families with financial management tools and skills; and fostered the civic engagement of thousands of South Asian New Yorkers.

What we do

Chhaya Community Development Corporation is a community-based non-profit organization focused on improving access to housing opportunities, resources, and information for South Asian Americans throughout New York City and the metropolitan area. We advocate for community and economic development and justice within South Asian and other immigrant communities.

South Asian Americans, a group that includes immigrants from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Caribbean nations such as Guyana and Trinidad, are New York City’s second-largest Asian community. These newest New Yorkers have a wide range of service needs. All of our services are offered in Bangla/Bengali, English, Hindi, and Urdu.

Chhaya works in the following key housing and immigration-related areas:

1. Homeownership education and counseling
2. Financial fitness, credit counseling and budgeting cunseling
3. Tenant rights organizing, education, and counseling
4. Information on illegal basement apartment conversions
5. Voter engagement
6. Assistance with housing discrimination or harassment
