Our mission

Our mission is to empower individuals with limited resources on their path to self-sufficiency through skills instruction, on-the-job training, and assistance with establishing a career in the food service industry and beyond.

What we do

We help people from low-income backgrounds find jobs. We teach them how to bake and job readiness through our Bakery Bootcamp. This 3-week intensive job training program provides technical training on the fundamental skills of commercial baking and food preparation, along with job readiness and life skills coaching. Trainees participate in a nationally-accredited food safety and sanitation course to receive their California State Food Handler’s Card prior to graduation. After Bootcamp ends, graduates benefit from 15 months of job placement assistance and follow-up support to help them acquire and retain employment.

We have a vision for all motivated individuals to be able to contribute to a stronger community through stable, gainful, and fulfilling work. In 2015, 90% of our graduates found jobs, and their average time to employment was just 30 days after graduation. In February 2016, The Bread Project received the East Bay Innovation Award in Education for our Bakery Bootcamp Program.
