We are a civil legal nonprofit with legal clinics set up in hospitals and community organizations throughout New York City. Our staff has grown dramatically in the last year as has our practice reach."Phone Calls" are 1 hour, one-time calls with an organization. LegalHealth partners with medical professionals to address the non-medical needs of low-income people with serious health problems. LegalHealth complements health care with legal care – providing free legal services in medical facilities and training healthcare professionals to understand the legal issues their patients face. LegalHealth extends its mission nationally by providing technical assistance to bring medical and legal partners together.
Since 2001, LegalHealth’s dedicated staff has improved the lives of over 26,000 low-income New Yorkers with serious health needs. Where social conditions pose a barrier to improved health, the LegalHealth team can advocate to ensure a patient’s right to access care, basic benefits, stable housing and immigration remedies.
LegalHealth’s training of health care providers at its partner hospitals raises awareness among the health care professionals to the non-medical barriers to improved patient health and they become actively involved in referring and advocating for their patients.
Speaking with Kasia was incredibly helpful! She was well prepared for the call and gave really valuable advice. She helped me think about my strategy in using different social media platforms and had so many great ideas that I will definitely use moving forward. Furthermore, she followed up right after the call with notes and links and other useful information. I highly recommend Kasia!
Alison was a pleasure to speak with! She had a clear set of objectives for the call, she asked good questions, and she was curious and eager to hear different ideas. I would definitely recommend Alison and the New York Legal Assistance Group to other volunteers!
