What are some best practices for collecting effective stories from my beneficiaries?

Additional context

We're an environmental advocacy group working at the policy level, lobbying elected officials at times. We do not engage at the grassroots level with beneficiaries of our advocacy. What strategies could we employ to gather and craft compelling stories about our work that appeal to likely donors?
