What we have in place

Our mission

The people of Molokai integrating the island’s legacy of aina momona (abundant land) with modern sustainability concepts to build a SUSTAINABLE MOLOKAI rooted in traditional knowledge and supported by emerging green practices and industries.

What we do

Sust'ainable Molokai is a grassroots non-profit organization committed to restoring the island's health and abundance, or aina momona. We aim to achieve this comprehensively via four thrusts: Food Self-Sufficiency; Economic Security; Energy Sovereignty; and Environmental Sustainability.
We have a 2 acre permaculture farm at the high school to teach classes to over 100 students weekly. Through our energy programs we have thus far help 360 families access energy star refrigerators saving them over one million dollars over the ten year period.
We also have three gardens in the elementary schools where we are able to reach 150 students and show them the whole growing cycle form green house to planting to eating! The sixth grade class even came up with their own Kale salad with Lemon and Honey dressing ( all locally grown). We have been able to integrate our mobile pizza oven into the school gardens showing kids and adults that all sorts of vegetables are good on pizza!
As the only island-wide non-profit organization focusing on these priorities, our vision is broad but our staff is purposefully small and efficient to maximize durability and resilience. We are grounded in our heritage, guided by our culture, and driven by modern, responsible sustainability strategies.
