North Light Community Center (NL) has been a part of Manayunk since 1936. It was created to keep students out of mischief during non-school hours toward the end of The Great Depression. 80+ years later NL remains a staple of the Manayunk/Roxborough community, particularly for the most vulnerable residents. NL has continued to be innovative to remain relevant and on top of serving its neighbor's greatest needs. The after-school program remains, and has been expanded upon to include quality child care, before school (including student drop off at school), and summer camp. Additionally, our teen-focused programs offer internship and professional development opportunities to hard working young adults, as well as a number of scholarship opportunities to help offset the massive costs of modern higher education. NL has expanded its mission to work with the entire neighborhood, not just children, and now operates a food cupboard on premises (FISH) two times per week, provides direct assistance to individuals who need help paying utility and gas bills (CUFF), and partners with others to deliver holiday gifts and meals to families (HAP).
