Biography

Dr. Paul Sproll (b. Bath, England) is a Professor in the Department of Teaching + Learning in Art + Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). His training as an artist and educator began at the Bath Academy of Art, which was followed by two decades of high school art teaching in England and Wales during which time he completed a BA (Art & Design History) from the Open University. A Fulbright exchange year in the U.S. led to the decision to leave the classroom in the UK to pursue graduate studies and a MA and Ph.D. in Art Education from The Ohio State University. Professor Sproll's teaching centers on inquiry-based pedagogies and his professional practice involves work at the intersection of formal and informal education. He is the founding director of Project Open Door - a college access program for creative teens attending under-resourced Rhode Island urban core city public high schools.
