What We Do

Safe Organized Spaces Richmond (SOS) is an organization that addresses the issue of homelessness and the unhoused population in Richmond, California, by employing unhoused individuals and providing them with work, outreach, and safe living spaces. We prioritize building relationships and trust, offering basic survival resources, and creating job opportunities for the unhoused. SOS takes a "Work First" approach rather than a traditional "Housing First" approach, aiming to empower individuals and provide them with purpose and choice. The organization focuses on community engagement, collaboration with partners, and a culture of care to address the complex challenges of homelessness in Richmond. SOS has shown positive outcomes, including employment of unhoused individuals, improved living conditions in encampments, and progress toward securing permanent and interim housing for its employees.
