Root's mission is to help young adults create a pathway to independence through foodservice training and employment. By developing essential life and work readiness skills, youth leave Root prepared for success in the workplace

What We Do

Root is a nonprofit social enterprise with a mission to help young adults create a pathway to independence through foodservice training and employment. Through an emphasis on food service training and targeted life-skills development, Root has built a Culinary Training Program and an Alumni Employment Program that supports multiple social enterprises, including a Community Catering Initiative to address local food insecurity, which is the focus of this request. To date, Root has graduated 188 trainees, developed externship and employer relationships with 30+ North Shore restaurants and food service operators, generated more than $800,000 in organizational earned income, prepared 100,000+ meals for those in need, and created more than 30 employment opportunities for Root alumni.
