Mission

The North Olympic Salmon Coalition works to promote robust wild salmon stocks for families, fishers, and local economies by furthering habitat restoration and education on the North Olympic Peninsula.

We are one of fourteen Regional Fisheries Enhancement Groups in Washington State, working directly with state agencies, tribal governments and local communities across the Olympic Peninsula.

What We Do

We are a small non-profit that does big work!

Restoration:
One of our most recent restoration projects is the Kilisut Harbor project. The goal of this project is to re-create 10-20 acres of historic tidal channels and reconnect a salt marsh linkage between southern Kilisut Harbor and Oak Bay to restore self-sustaining ecosystem processes to approximately 2,300 acres of highly productive habitat in the harbor. These actions will re-establish a major northern and southern migratory passage for juvenile and adult salmonids, including ESA-listed Hood Canal summer Chum, Puget Sound Chinook and Puget Sound Steelhead.

Education:
We have led youth education programs since 1990. Currently, we teach a year round curriculum for middle school students that allows them to envision, design, and implement their own salmon habitat restoration project. Throughout the school year, we take the entire 7th grade class on three different field trips. Class lessons before and after each trip help equip students with the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) skills they will apply directly in the field.

Community:
In 2019, more than 200 community volunteers planted 10,000 native trees and shrubs. Our volunteers are the backbone of our organization. From planting trees, to coming out for BINGO fundraisers, to supporting youth field days - we are thankful for the unwavering support of the community.
