Mission

Mat Bevel Company is an arts and science nonprofit that sparks the creative genius in people through found-object kinetic art, surrealistic pop theater, hands-on discovery learning, and multimedia art productions to dispel the common myth that creative genius is a talent only a few possess. To fulfill this mission, we produce and present original fine art, teach the next generation of youth how to invent and create, and serve artists and arts organizations who are revitalizing communities through the creative economy.

Our work dispels a common myth that creative genius is a talent only a few possess. In fact, Dr. George Land's work proved that 98% of people are born with abundant creative genius potential, but by young adulthood, that genius has plummeted to 2% because we stop using the imagination. Through our programs, people discover new ways to use their imaginations to solve problems, generate original ideas and invent things that improve lives, communities and the world.

What We Do

Our programs include:
1. The Museum Of Kinetic Art features over 150 mechanical fine art sculptures that demonstrate how even junk can be transformed into objects of beauty and purpose. MBC Founder Ned Schaper's kinetic art museum set attendance records at the Tucson Museum of Art during a two-month solo artist retrospective in 2014. The museum is also one of four unique Tucson art destinations on Atlas Obscura, a definitive guidebook to the world's most wondrous places.
2. The Universe Within STEAM world-building program fosters kinesthetic learning and teaches youth how to tackle challenges with imagination. The curriculum is based on Ned Schaper's work and theatrical world of Beveldom, a framework developed over 35 years that includes his theater, museum, and lifelong creative practices called Available Resource Technology (A.R.T.).
3. Bevelvision Productions was launched to create modern online digital theater formats inspired by Ned Schaper's Surrealistic Pop Science Theater, using various cinematography and post-production techniques to make content widely accessible. These novel offerings include "Bevel Cafe: A Junk Reality Show" and "Kid Bevel."
4. MBC's Santa Cruz Creative Exchange offers strategic marketing and multimedia services to art organizations throughout Santa Cruz County, via the Morley Arts District in Nogales, to revitalize communities through the creative economic sector.
