Mission

We believe healthy families build healthy communities. We harness the power and resilience of single mothers who have experienced trauma to rebuild themselves and their lives to change the course of their families for generations.

What We Do

Malta House was founded in 1998 as a home for pregnant and parenting women over the age of 18 and their babies who are experiencing homelessness. Headquartered in Norwalk, CT, we are the only home like us in the entire state, and we serve women from throughout Connecticut, New Jersey and New York. We provide a full, wrap-around services to the mother for as long as she needs to work toward housing and financial independence. We also manage an active community outreach program, to provide basic needs to families in our community.

Our Residential Program Services:
o Housing - safe, secure and private housing for mother and child. The average residential stay is eight months and many mothers stay up to 18 months until they reach their goals.
o Personal Development Plan - case manager and mother develop a personal development plan together, setting goals and a roadmap based on Malta House's successful Tier Program.
o Free childcare - this is a primary barrier to success for single mothers. We provide free childcare to residents and for one year, post-residence.
o Classes - we provide classes on personal finance, parenting, early childhood development, nutrition, cooking, exercise, and more. All mothers are required to build up a personal savings before "graduation".
o Educational Support - each mother receives support to work toward their next educational goal, whether that is attaining a high school GED, professional certification or college degree.
o Weekly Therapy - an on-site therapist meets with mothers weekly to provide trauma-informed care
o Spirituality - we offer interdenominational spirituality teaching to aid mothers in healing
o Advocacy - we provide mothers the opportunity to be paired with a Mother Mentor, as a way to bond with a fellow mother who can offer support, solutions and a listening ear. Many of these relationships continue even after the mother has left Malta House.
o Post-Residential Support - once a Malta Mom, always a Malta Mom. We offer the Partnering in Success Program for "graduates" so they continue receiving periodic well-visits and the support they need even into independence.

While Malta House was founded by an order of Catholic lay people who are still supportive today, there is no proselytizing as a part of our program. All women, volunteers and donors are welcome no matter their faith tradition. We are led by the Catholic faith principles of faith, hope, love and a strong believe in social justice.
