Mission
Homeless Services United is a coalition of approximately 50 nonprofit agencies providing emergency and transitional assistance to homeless and at-risk adults and children in New York City. Homeless Services United (HSU) strengthens member agencies' capacity to deliver high-quality services by providing advocacy, information, training, and technical assistance. What We Do
HSU is a small but mighty organization that in 2013 will celebrate 10 years in existence as the voice for those that serve some of the neediest New Yorkers--the homeless. We are staffed by 2 long-term and dedicated staff members who share a love of technology as tool to organize and make great change in the world. Additionally we have a VERY active board of directors who operate some of the most prestigious and effective homeless service organizations in the New York City.HSU is the only member organization representing New York City’s nonprofit homeless shelter providers. We have nearly 50 member agencies operating over 110 shelters across all five boroughs of the city. Our members operate a broad range of additional programs including on-site social services, youth services, eviction prevention, drop-in centers, food pantries, community outreach and supportive housing.
HSU works to ensure that New York City’s nonprofit shelter providers have the resources they need to continue to meet each new crisis. HSU advocates on City and State levels to make certain homeless services and homelessness prevention programs are fully funded and that housing and homelessness policies are the best they can be. In the last three years, our advocacy has won more than $45 million in restorations to essential housing and homelessness programs. This past year, with the support of our members, we were able to successfully secure $3.2 Million in new State funding for NYC eviction prevention programs. HSU is a small, high impact organization representing New York City’s nonprofit homeless shelter providers. HSU operates on a barebones budget, yet each year we successfully fight for the funding our members need to best serve the most vulnerable New Yorkers. We also provide trainings and access to resources for our members.
