The mission of DBDT is to create and produce contemporary modern dance at the highest level of artistic excellence through performances and educational programs that bridge cultures and reach diverse communities. DBDT's highest purpose is to positively impact lives and bridge cultures through the transformative power of dance, from the African American perspective. Designated an American Masterpiece Touring Artist by the National Endowment for the Arts, DBDT has performed for more than 4 million arts patrons and 2.5 million students in 31 states across the U.S. and in 16 countries on five continents, including two Cultural Olympiad engagements.
What We Do
Since its founding, Dallas Black Dance Theatre has expanded across all levels to become the premier and oldest professional dance company in Dallas. Located in the thriving downtown Dallas Arts District, DBDT engages the cross-cultural community through contemporary modern dance presented from the African-American experience. The organization has two professional performing ensembles that present a year-long season and an Academy with 50 weekly classes. Three youth ensembles of elite Academy students also perform in the community. DBDT conducts outreach in its local community with area schools and civic centers.
