Mission

The Center for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services (CASES) is one of New York City’s leading not-for-profit providers of alternative sentencing programs for court-involved individuals, with a wide range of experience helping thousands of individuals build productive, crime-free lives. Our mission is to increase the understanding and use of community sanctions that are fair, affordable, and consistent with public safety.

What We Do

In 1967 the Vera Institute of Justice, a non-profit organization that develops and operates innovative criminal and social justice programs, created the Court Employment Project (CEP) to give New York City judges the choice of pre-trial diversion for court-involved young people. A second Vera program begun the 1979, the Community Service Sentencing Project, utilized community service as a justice system tool. The two projects merged in 1989 to form the Center for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services (CASES). Since then, CASES has continued to develop innovative programs to extend alternative sentencing options to more court-involved individuals while expanding the scope of our services. In the coming year, CASES will operate four youth programs, five adult behavioral health programs and the Staten Island Community Service Project and serve nearly 4,000 individuals across New York City.
