Mission
The Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health( AAIUH) is a best practice harbinger of interventions that improve health and education for multi-ethnic populations locally and nationally.Created by the great humanitarian Arthur Ashe in 1992, shortly before he died from AIDS, the Institute’s mission is to address the social and cultural issues that affect the health and wellness of racial/ethnic minority and immigrant populations living in America’s urban centers.
What We Do
AAIUH creates and operates programs that reduce health care disparities, improve health service outcomes for underserved groups and increase minority representation in the health care and health sciences fields.THE HEALTH SCIENCE ACADEMY
In alignment with National Science Education Standards, the Academy is a three-year, college-level after school science enrichment program which offers students of color activities that build their commitment to choosing careers in health and fosters their understanding of the impact of health careers on their communities. The Academy enrolls nearly 200 students in grades 10 through 12 from participating Brooklyn public and parochial schools.
BARBERSHOP TALK WITH BROTHERS
Dynamic, interactive workshops conducted under this program educate men in Brooklyn about HIV/AIDS risk-reduction.
HEART OF A WOMAN PROJECT
Based in beauty salons, this program's current initiative is to address cardiovascular disease utilizing a cultural tailored curriculum to promote risk-reduction messages to African American and Afro-Caribbean women.
BROOKLYN HEALTH DISPARITIES CENTER
A partnership between AAIUH, SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and the Brooklyn Borough President's Office, the Center conducts a summer internship in which high school students are educated about health disparities and rained with community engagement research skills.
Arthur Ashe said, "What sets champions apart from winners is the desire to leave the game better than they found it."
Most recently, our Health Disparities Center was replicated in Trinidad and Tobago. AAIUH's future lies in continuing to inspire others to embrace Arthur's vision. From this, multi-ethnic urban communities across the country will all benefit from the services of culturally competent health professionals and become empowered to respond to gender, race and culture-based disparities in health.
