Mission

To instill a sense of wonder, respect, and stewardship for the Pacific Ocean, its inhabitants, and ecosystems.

What We Do

The Aquarium of the Pacific is the key voice and storyteller for the Pacific Ocean. As the fourth-largest Aquarium in the nation and one of the most-visited cultural destinations in Southern California, the Aquarium has long been a trusted resource for families and students throughout the region. More than 12,000 animals in 100 vibrant exhibits inspire wonder and spark conversations about sustainability, empowering our onsite visitors to imagine a bright future for our ocean planet.

As an informal science education institution, our primary focus is on providing vital science and environmental education to our community. More than 170,000 students (grades preK - 12), teachers, and families participated in our virtual programs last year. Of these, many are from under-resourced schools in the greater Los Angeles area. The Aquarium's education staff has created numerous online opportunities to keep young students engaged, such as live synchronous lessons, webcam resource kits, curriculum modules for middle/high school that explore conservation topics and ocean-related careers, and other family-focused virtual events. We have also remained committed to providing resources to teachers, expanding their access to science, and equipping them with the tools and training they need to effectively teach science topics in their classrooms.

At the forefront of ocean conservation strategies and environmental initiatives, Aquarium scientists are actively engaged in numerous conservation initiatives, including endangered species recovery and restoration and community science programs. Through our Aquatic Forums and Aquatic Academy, we convene scientists, educators, community leaders, and policy makers to develop solutions to complex environmental issues.
