I don't know why one so rarely sees Journalism as a choice in the Professional Expertise section. Perhaps it no longer exists and Brand Management is the place to be. I've been a successful freelance journalist in New York for six years now. Before that, I worked as a staff radio reporter at the BBC in London, for five years.

It must be a fairly common freelance story, starting in a narrow niche and accumulating skills and experience. I feel like I'm growing as a professional as the industry is contracting. I need a change and a challenge.

I began in New York as a music reporter for my old BBC radio station and an occasional music writer for the Guardian. During the 2008 primaries and election, I started to write weekly reports for the Sunday Herald, from the campaign trail, the conventions, election night and the inauguration.

I've written several in-depth features about social issues, including the war on drugs, military suicides, gay marriage, fracking, and teenage incarceration.

I have ten years radio experience, in presenting, reporting, producing, editing etc - all the skills needed to make professional radio independently. I've made three BBC World Service radio documentaries by myself, including one about homeless Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.

I've also done plenty professional work as a cameraman, working with my wife, who is a Brazilian video reporter. We covered the 2008 election together and have continued to shoot reports as a team, when possible.

We have a two-year-old son, so I need a flexible working schedule and can only devote so many hours per week to the project, but I do promise full engagement and commitment, to make something really worthwhile for an organisation that I believe in.

I'm hoping to make a multimedia project: film, podcast, blog, newspaper articles. I will have access to professional video and audio equipment. I just need the right story and the right cause.
