Science from Scientists has requested professional assistance from Catchafire for a public relations campaign both with our in-school science programming, currently serving over 2,000 students annually, and with our new Comcast on demand production, The Dr. Erika Show. To assure the effectiveness of this campaign, we need a press list of media outlets and specific contacts within those outlets to target on an ongoing basis with press releases, news announcements, and information about special events. We will need regionally (New England) and nationally targeted lists including all up-to-date contact information for key reporters at media outlets, publications, and blogs that are relevant to science and to education.

Description

A press list is a list of media outlets and contacts that an organization wants to target on an ongoing basis or a list designed for a specific news announcement or event. This is a targeted list of key reporters and publications that are relevant to an organization and the types of news it wishes to publicize. A press list helps an organization reach media outlets likely to feature news about its work.

Deliverables

A press list that allows an organization to reach out to its target audience with future communications, whether that is for general communications or for news announcements related to a specific public relations outreach effort.

Project steps

  1. The professional assesses current contacts and media list resources of the organization.

  2. The organization and the professional identify and discuss target audience(s) for press and communications outreach.

  3. The professional builds an initial list based on the organization's goals, target audience, and content of news (if list is for specific announcement) through research of relevant reporters and publications.

  4. The professional delivers a draft list to the organization for review and feedback.

  5. The professional incorporates feedback and includes new contacts in the list.

  6. The professional delivers a final media list along with recommendations for how organization can update the list as new contacts are identified in the future.

Prerequisites

Professional

  • At least 2 years of experience in public relations
  • Experience with media outreach and creating press lists for general communications or targeted campaigns
