Boston After School & Beyond co-manages a database/search engine of after-school programs in the city called BostoNavigator (http://www.bostonavigator.org/). BostoNavigator includes program information for over 1,600 programs in the city offered by around 700 organizations.

One of our main goals is to help all of Boston's kids enroll in quality after-school programs. So many kids are left without programs during the school year and the summer, even though many program slots remain open. We think a visually stimulating infographic would help more providers list their programs in Navigator, and help motivate more students and parents to enroll in these programs.

Based on program profiles on BostoNavigator, we already have a rich set of data on program content, location, dosage, capacity enrollment, staffing ratios, and more. All this data is ready to start to tell the story of out of school time program in the city of Boston - and we need your help to do it!

Description

Infographics quickly convey complex data and information in a visually appealing, clear and engaging format. An example of infographics can be viewed here.

Deliverables

A static infographic design delivered in the agreed upon file format.

Project steps

  1. The organization completes the Design Brief in preparation for the initial project meeting.

  2. The pro bono designer and the organization conduct an initial meeting to brainstorm the organization’s objectives, intended use (e.g. print or web) of the infographic, target audience, key messages to convey through the infographic, and determine the file format of the final design (e.g. JPG, PNG, etc.). Recommended: the organization provides 3-5 sample infographics to the designer as a creative guideline for the initial concept.

  3. The organization and designer review all available data that can be used in the infographic to ensure the objectives can be achieved and key message can be conveyed, and brainstorm the theme and style of the infographic.

  4. The designer and the organization finalize the information and content to be included in the infographic.

  5. The designer completes 2-3 initial concept sketches of the design themes, layout and arrangement of the information.

  6. The designer and the organization review the initial concept sketches and decide the one design concept to move forward.

  7. Based on the selected design concept, the designer drafts the infographic and goes through 2-3 rounds of reviewing the design with the organization.

  8. The designer delivers the final design of the infographic in the agreed upon file format.

Please Note: The designer must be appropriately credited alongside any and all uses of the design (editorial, print, web, etc.). The designer’s exact credit must be given upon delivery of final product to ensure proper credit.
