Our mission

BELL exists to transform the academic achievements, self-confidence, and life trajectories of children living in under-resourced, urban communities.

What we do

We deliver world-class learning experiences during the summer and after school to children in grades K-8. We focus on serving students - who we call "scholars" - who are falling behind academically, attend low-performing schools, and come from under-resources neighborhoods. We pursue our work in public schools in Boston, where we were established nearly 20 years ago, as well as in Baltimore, Charlotte, Detroit, Newark, New York, and Springfield (MA).

BELL stands out as a leader in the summer learning and after school space because of the clear, measurable impact its programs have on student achievement. For example, the BELL Summer program has been independently evaluated and found to have a significant, positive impact on scholars' reading skills and parental involvement. Our partnerships with schools and districts have helped thousands of students gain skills, catch up to their peers, and gain the confidence and determiniation needed to sustain their success.
