Courageous Sailing Center of Boston, Inc.

Mission

Courageous Sailing, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is an education-based sailing community. Through affordable lessons and memberships, our adult and adaptive programs expand access to sailing and the Boston waterfront. Our need-blind summer and after-school youth programs aim to prepare Boston's diverse youth for responsible and confident futures through active discovery sailing on their city's harbor.

What We Do

Courageous has had a growing role within the community over the past 25 years. What started as a mission to bring sailing to kids in Boston has not only succeeded but also expanded to a true community sailing center. We have two major programs, our Youth Program and Adult Program.

Youth Program:
To accomplish our mission, Courageous' well-known Youth Program brings kids from all neighborhoods of the city to one of our three locations (Charlestown, Jamaica Pond, or Camp Harbor View) for a session of sailing lasting either 1 or 3 weeks. It is a 5-step program culminating in job training for our most successful students. Many of our students grow up to be instructors who provide high-quality sailing instruction for our paying adult customers. We serve nearly 1,000 Boston kids annually.

We are extremely proud of the quality of our programming, which has grown to operate out-of- school and after-school programs in addition to our 6 weeks of summer sailing. Courageous offers out-of-school time programming for Charlestown schools, a new partnership with Boston Public Schools to fight summer learning loss, and high school coaching for the Boston Latin School and Boston Public Schools' Sailing Teams.

Adult Program:
The Adult Program is the membership program and sailing school through which we earn revenue to support our free and low cost youth programs. While over two decades old, our Adult Program has been rapidly expanding in the last few years. We have a diverse adult community of members, students, and racers, whose involvement helps fund our youth programs. As a community sailing center we believe it's important not only to give youth an opportunity to learn from sailing, but to give everyone access to the water. Plus, what better way to help a non-profit than by helping it to make money!
